Local Special Interest Groups (SIGs)

As the fifth largest local group within American Mensa, San Francisco Regional Mensa (SFRM) boasts a vibrant community of approximately 1,300 members. With our growing list of Special Interest Groups (SIGs), there’s no better way to connect with fellow Mensans who share your passions and interests.  SFRM SIGs cover a wide range of topics, from intellectual discussions and problem-solving to outdoor adventures and cultural experiences. Whether you’re a nature lover or a movie buff there’s a SIG for you.

Each SIG coordinates activities within their respective areas, providing opportunities for meaningful interactions and shared experiences. These events may or may not be listed in our main event calendar or Meetup group, so it’s essential to join the specific SIG you’re interested in to stay informed and engaged. By participating in a SIG, you’ll have the chance to explore new ideas, learn from others, and broaden your horizons. Engage in thought-provoking discussions, discover hidden gems in the Bay Area, or collaborate on projects that make a difference in your community.

To get started, join the respective Mensa Connect (MC) community (log-in required) or fill out this form to be added.  Select the ones that pique your interest, and start connecting with like-minded individuals who share your enthusiasm.  Don’t miss out on the opportunity to expand your social and intellectual circle.

If you are an SFRM member who would like to create a SIG, please reach out to the SIG coordinator, Lana Lee.

Local Areas

Coordinate a hike or meetup for coffee with other members in your neck of the woods or if you live in another part of the Bay Area, ask for some local tips. All groups are on Mensa Connect.

Interests & Activities

  • Arts and Culture Club (MC) – From the screen to the stage to fan fests and conferences, the Bay Area is an art hub for music concerts, film festivals, and exhibits.
  • Bay Area Explorers (MC) – The SF Bay has so many great trails and beautiful scenery. Either coordinate a hike, day trip, or share a hidden gem that you found with others.
  • Brilliance by the Bay Regional Gathering (MC) – Join us as we discuss all things related to SFRM’s Regional Gathering “Brilliance by the Bay”. This is a great place to get the latest updates about upcoming RGs or share suggestions for programming, activities, and future gatherings.
  • Chess Club and Classes – You want to learn chess, but don’t know where to start. You’re an intermediate, looking to deepen your understanding of the game. Or maybe you just want to learn a new hobby. Join SFRM’s chess club to scratch that strategic itch. Takes place on Discord. Request to join SFRM’s server.
  • Think Tank (MC) – Meeting of the Mensa minds to actively help solve problems at local and national levels

Life Stages

  • Career Development and Networking  (MC) – Mensans helping other Mensans as they navigate job market and thrive in their careers. Whether you’re exploring new job prospects or have an opportunity to share, this SIG is for you!
  • Parents of SFRM Gifted Youth – Facebook group for parents of all active gifted youth members. Use this group to connect with each other and arrange ad hoc non-SFRM GY meetups with other Mensa members without actually needing a Mensa volunteer to organize an event and share info about local events and programs.
  • Parents Network (MC) – Feed two birds with one scone by coordinating family-friendly events so that you and your kids can socialize. The SFRM Parents Network will act as a space for parents in San Francisco Regional Mensa to post questions, exchange local recommendations, advice, etc. related to our area as parents.
  • Gen X, Y, Z – Meetup group for young adult mensans (at least 18) to Gen X (born between January 1, 1961 and December 31, 1981)
