News and views for gifted youth and their parents/guardians in my Region 8 local groups

Happy National Volunteer Month!

The history of National Volunteer Month dates back to the mid-20th century when numerous organizations and nonprofits began acknowledging the immense contributions of volunteers. For example, in 1943, Canada established a National Volunteer Week to recognize women who were helping in the World War II effort. – convoyofhope.org

April Event: Color a Smile
Our next virtual meeting will be on Saturday, April 27th at 9am PT/10am MT where we will gather online to color, chat ,and send colored pages to senior citizens, kids, our troops overseas and anyone in need of a smile through an organization called Color a Smile.  The hours you spend coloring can count toward the Mensa Honor Society too!

Color a Smile will validate 10  minutes of volunteer work for each complete drawing that you send us: 1 drawing is 10 minutes of volunteer time, 6 drawings = 60 minutes, etc.

Gifted Youth (GY) Volunteer Opportunities

Many of you are applying for the Mensa Honor Society and are looking for volunteer hours. If you’d like to work with me on any of the following opportunities, please send me a message:

  • Introduce guest speakers at our virtual events
  • Write an event summary about our virtual events that will be published on my Region 8 Gifted Youth Coordinator website, region8gyc.com and possibly in your local newsletter as well!
  • Give a short presentation to other GY about an upcoming event. E.g. One GY member gave an amazing presentation about Chesskids.com at one of our online gaming events.

Find the current GY opportunities on the Region 8 GYC website here  where the first event is related to our April Color a Smile event 🙂

Heads Up: SFRM Regional Gathering Gifted Youth Track

My local group, San Francisco Regional Mensa hosts their Regional Gathering the weekend before Thanksgiving (November 22-24) and I’ll be creating a GY track of events and activities.  I’ll have more details in the coming months, but for now, save the date!
